Wedgewood Elementary School, built in 1977, is located in the Wedgewood Subdivision, at 2330 Aspenwood Ave., in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. There are more than 700 students currently enrolled in grades pre-K through 5. The faculty is comprised of 31 classroom teachers, six special education teachers, two gifted teachers, a reading coach, two speech therapists, a librarian, two guidance counselors, a technology specialist, music teacher, art teacher, French teacher, three P.E. teachers, and fifteen paraprofessionals. Wedgewood staff includes a principal, assistant principal, secretary, two clerks, nurse, timeout moderator, cafeteria manager, cafeteria staff, and two full time custodians.
Wedgewood’s students are taught on individual instructional levels in both Math and Reading, based on extensive diagnostic testing. Multi-level groups are fluid so that students are placed appropriately at all times. Teachers meet as grade levels three times per week to interpret and analyze testing data, as well as colaborate on lessons and activities based on the comprehensive curriculum. Wedgewood’s teachers also participate in professional development monthly, both on Wedgewood’s campus and at national conferences.

Encourage your children to have fun with reading!
Allow children to choose books that interest them while encouraging them to explore different authors, themes, and genres (biography, adventure, historical fiction, science fiction or fantasy, poetry, and others)
For strong readers, choose books with an appropriate but stimulating reading level
For reluctant readers, choose books they can read without difficulty while holding their interest
Encourage children to read for a specified period of time every day (30 minutes to 1 hour) at a regular time
Read with and to your children and talk to them about what they are reading
